How to rank in ChatGPT in 2026.
ChatGPT does not rank pages the way Google ranks pages. It cites brands by name in a generated answer. Here is exactly what works, in 2026, to get a B2B brand quoted.
Three on-page moves, three off-page moves.
- On-page 1. Add an entity statement to your homepage. Wikipedia-style: brand name, what it does, where it is based, in one sentence.
- On-page 2. Add a FAQ block with FAQPage schema. Ten Q&A pairs that mirror real buyer questions.
- On-page 3. Add Organization, Service, and Article schema across the site. Named-author credits on every blog post.
- Off-page 1. Get your brand into the major listicles in your category (Grow and Convert, Onely, Forbes Council, trade press).
- Off-page 2. Reddit. Quora. Stack Overflow. The third-party domains ChatGPT cites from heavily.
- Off-page 3. Original research. A named methodology, a benchmark, a survey. Something other writers cite back to you.
Why this works.
ChatGPT (and the other AI assistants) generate answers by retrieving from a large library of indexed content, then summarizing. Two things determine whether a brand gets cited: how well-defined the brand is as an entity (what is it, where, who runs it), and how many high-authority third-party sources mention it by name in your category.
The on-page work makes you legible to retrieval models. The off-page work makes you cited by other domains the retrieval models trust. You need both.
What does not work.
- Stuffing keywords. Doesn't work for ChatGPT, doesn't work for Google, hasn't worked since 2012.
- AI-generated content at scale. The retrieval models can detect it. They penalize it.
- Buying backlinks. Hurts you in Google. Doesn't move ChatGPT either.
- Adding "as an AI" disclaimers. Does not affect citation behavior. Wastes word count.
