# The Perplexity SEO guide.

Perplexity shows its sources. Every answer carries a numbered list of the pages it used, which makes it the most measurable of the answer engines and the easiest place to see whether your work is landing. Here is what Perplexity documents, what the research shows, and how to act on both.

## What matters for Perplexity specifically.

- **Two user agents, two rules.** [PerplexityBot](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) is the search crawler and honors robots.txt. Perplexity-User fetches pages on a user's request and generally does not.

- **Blocking at the firewall is the common failure.** Perplexity publishes IP ranges for both agents so they can be allowed explicitly in a WAF.

- **No JavaScript rendering.** Vercel's analysis lists PerplexityBot among the crawlers that [fetch HTML but do not execute JavaScript](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler).

- **Freshness counts across engines.** AI-cited pages were [25.7% fresher](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content) than organic results in Ahrefs' 16.975 million URL sample, which included Perplexity.

- **Citation is visible, so measure it directly.** Because every source is listed, share of voice on Perplexity can be counted by hand, and [citation and brand mention should be logged separately](https://www.semrush.com/blog/the-ghost-citations-study/).

## What Perplexity documents about access.

Perplexity's developer documentation describes [two agents](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers). PerplexityBot is, in its words, designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity, and it respects robots.txt. Perplexity-User handles direct user requests, such as when someone pastes a URL or asks a question that needs a specific page, and the documentation says it generally ignores robots.txt because the visit originates from a person.

| User agent | Purpose | Honors robots.txt | IP list |
|---|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results | Yes | perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json |
| Perplexity-User | Fetches pages on a user's request | Generally no | perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json |

The practical consequence is that a rule in robots.txt controls whether you can be found through Perplexity search, while a firewall rule controls whether a user can open your page inside Perplexity at all. Both should allow the published ranges. Rule changes take up to 24 hours to apply.

## What the research says, and what it does not.

Most of the published evidence about answer engines is cross-engine, and Perplexity-specific studies with public methodology are rare. Three findings transfer cleanly.

First, page-level writing changes move citation share. The [Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, KDD 2024](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) paper tested edits such as adding sourced statistics, attributed quotes, inline citations, and clearer prose, and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses. Second, recency matters: in Ahrefs' analysis, AI assistants as a group cited content that was [on average 368 days newer than organic results](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content). Third, the pages that get cited are the ones an engine can read without executing scripts, which [Vercel measured](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler) across its network.

Claims you will see elsewhere about Perplexity's exact ranking weights, hard-coded authority domains, or time-decay curves come from reverse-engineering, not from Perplexity. Treat them as hypotheses to test on your own prompt panel, not as facts.

## Five moves, in order.

- **Open the door.** Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, allow both published IP ranges in the firewall, and confirm with a fetch from an external tool that the page returns full HTML.

- **Answer first.** Restructure key pages so each section opens with the direct answer, then the evidence with its source, then the context. A section should make sense on its own when quoted.

- **Put numbers on the page.** Replace adjectives with figures you can source. If the figure is yours, publish the method behind it.

- **Get mentioned where Perplexity looks.** Independent lists, trade press, and community threads in the category carry more weight than another link from a directory.

- **Count it.** Run a fixed set of category prompts monthly, list every cited domain, and record whether your brand was cited, named, or both.

## How we measure Perplexity.

Perplexity is part of the monthly prompt panel in every Reneka GEO Engine engagement, reported per engine alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The [methodology page](https://renekadigital.com/resources/methodology/) explains the prompt set, the cadence, and why citations and mentions are tracked as separate numbers. A [free citation audit](https://renekadigital.com/book-a-citation-audit/) runs the panel live on your brand.

## Common questions.

### Does Perplexity respect robots.txt?

PerplexityBot, the search crawler, does. Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a user asks for it, generally does not, according to Perplexity's own documentation. Control the first with robots.txt and the second with firewall rules using Perplexity's published IP ranges.

### Can Perplexity read JavaScript-rendered content?

Vercel's network-wide analysis found PerplexityBot fetches HTML but does not execute JavaScript. Content that only appears after scripts run should be moved into the initial HTML response.

### How do I check whether Perplexity cites my site?

Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask and read the numbered source list on each answer. Repeat a fixed set of prompts monthly, record every cited domain, and log whether your brand was linked, named, or both.
